The conclusion of the 2024 general elections was followed by a political frenzy as no single party managed to get majority seats. This was coupled with a stark up and down in the stock market. Here is a look back at some of the important national and international headlines from the last week.

Lok Sabha Elections 2024 Notable Winners

While Prime Minister Narendra Modi won the Varanasi seat for the third consecutive term, home Minister Amit Shah won the Gandhinagar seat in Gujarat. The former Karnataka chief minister HD Kumaraswamy won from Karnataka’s Mandya seat. Congress MP Rahul Gandhi won from Raebareli. Meanwhile, the BJP opened its account in Kerala as Suresh Gopi won from Thrissur. Congress MLA Geniben Thakor won the Banaskantha seat in Gujarat. This was the first time in a decade that Congress won a Lok Sabha seat in Gujarat.

7 BJP Union Ministers Lost Lok Sabha Polls in UP

Seven out of 11 union Ministers from BJP who fought the Lok Sabha polls from Uttar Pradesh lost the election. Union minister for women and child development Smriti Irani lost from Amethi by a margin of over 1.6 lakh votes. Union minister of state for home affairs Ajay Mishra Teni lost from Kheri by 34,329 votes. Two-time BJP MP and union minister of state for fisheries, animal husbandry, and dairying Sanjeev Balyan lost in Muzaffarnagar by 24,000 votes, Union minister of state for micro, small, and medium enterprises Bhanu Pratap Verma lost the Jalaun seat by 53,898 votes. Union minister of state for consumer affairs, food and public distribution, and rural development Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti missed out on 33,199 votes in Fatehpur. Kaushal Kishore, the union minister of state for housing and urban affairs, lost Mohanlalganj constituency by 70,292 votes. Mahendra Nath Pandey, the union minister for heavy industries lost from the Chandauli parliamentary constituency by approximately 21,000.

Astronaut Sunita Williams Does Her Happy Dance After Arriving At Space Station

Indian-American astronaut Sunita Williams did a small happy dance after she and her crewmate Barry “Butch” Wilmore safely reached the International Space Station (ISS) on Thursday. The duo had travelled in the Boeing Starliner capsule. Sunita Williams, who has become the first woman to pilot a new crewed spacecraft on its maiden mission, hugged the seven astronauts who were already at ISS. This is Sunita Williams’ third space trip.

Stock Market Crash

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi accused Narendra Modi and Amit Shah of causing turbulence in the stock market on June 4, when the results of the Lok Sabha election 2024 were being announced. The Congress leader claimed that both the Prime Minister and Home Minister had assured investors that the stock market would rise. However, when the market dropped, investors “lost 30 lakh crore rupees” on June 4. He described this loss as the “biggest scam in the history of the Indian stock market”. BJP leader Piyush Goyal accused Rahul Gandhi of fear-mongering amongst national and international investors.

CISF Constable Suspended And Arrested For Allegedly Slapping Kangana Ranaut

A CISF woman constable, Kulwinder Kaur, reportedly slapped Bollywood actor and newly elected MP from Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi, Kangana Ranaut on Thursday. The CISF constable has now been suspended and an FIR is also filed against her. The paramilitary security personnel said that she was triggered by Kangana Ranaut’s old comments about the women of Punjab who were protesting against the now-revoked farm laws. At the time, Kangana Ranaut had said that elderly women at a protest site were being paid Rs 100 to sit there.
